What is PayYou:

Threat Classification: PUP/adware

PayYou or Ads by PayYou or PayYou Ads is an adware, claiming to be a legit Internet browser, which pays money for browsing the Internet. It could be downloaded from its webpage, but it also is distributed via the bundle model. This adware is designed and developed with the sole purpose to serve as many web ads as possible on the victim’s computer. It is considered a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) and/or adware program, which displays various unwanted advertisements on almost every webpage you visit. Once installed, the PayYou adware quickly corrupts the browser’s settings, making the recovery even harder. If you start getting various web ads, claiming that they are – “Ads by PayYou”, “PayYou Ads”, “By PayYou”, “Powered by PayYou”, “Brought by PayYou” or “Brought to you by PayYou” – you should consider your computer compromised. PayYou loads unwanted ads on almost every webpage you visit. Furthermore,  the adware appears to work with all the well-known browsers like Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.

Generally, users that have it installed on their systems might experience various pop-up or pop-under ads, coupon boxes, banners, search suggestion windows, sponsored link advertisements or other commercials, displayed on popular web pages. The infected computer might also show little buttons referring you to similar products, which will be distributed by the Adware itself. The victim should also consider, that the search results are compromised as well. The search results are often overloaded with spam and/or third-party advertising.

PayYou is usually bundled with some other free ad-supported software products and is being installed by default, when the user accepts the EULA, while performing an express/recommended installation of that software bundle. The possible distribution of PayYou varies but is not limited to – installing third-party toolbars, free software products, video editing software, codecs, downloading e-mail attachments, clicking on ads or banners etc..

The main purpose of PayYou is to generate more traffic to the attacker’s domains, which could easily be monetized via one of the many online marketing platforms. Please note, that that the creators of such or similar adware or malware would collect information that might be used to track your browsing habits, however often they collect much more then your web search history. PayYou may use cookies and other relevant techniques, that might be used to collect private data like account information, username, passwords, financial information including credit card and bank account numbers etc. That’s why this malware infection should not be left unattended, and needs to be terminated immediately, as it is a serious threat to your private data and online security.

!!! Please note, that these infections could potentially bring up other malware to your computer and even cause a loss of data. Please do not underestimate such threats.
