What is Unfriend Alert:

Threat Classification: PUP/adware

Unfriend Alert is another piece of adware, developed by the Fun Technology, which is intended for Facebook users. The application is supposed to inform you about every Facebook user, who has removed you from his/her’s friends list. This application was recently announced an adware/PUP, so you should be very careful if you already have it installed on your computer. It is not always distributed via the official website, but also using the “bundle” model, which installs several free ad-supported products with a single software packet – a bundle. This is the easiest way to distribute adware or other malicious software applications, because the bundle needs a single click on the “I agree” button to get everything done. These kinds of applications are designed with the sole purpose to serve as many ads as possible on the victim’s computer. Unfriend Alert is considered a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) and/or adware program, which is capable of showing various unwanted advertisements on almost every webpage you visit. Once installed, the Unfriend Alert adware quickly corrupts the browser’s settings, making the recovery even harder. If you start getting various web ads, claiming that they are – “Ads by Unfriend Alert”, “Unfriend Alert Ads”, “By Unfriend Alert”, “Powered by Unfriend Alert”, “Brought by Unfriend Alert” or “Brought to you by Unfriend Alert” – you should consider your computer infected. Unfriend Alert loads unwanted ads on almost every webpage you visit. Furthermore,  the adware appears to work with all the well-known browsers like Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.

Generally, users that have it installed on their systems might experience various pop-up or pop-under ads, coupon boxes, banners, search suggestion windows, sponsored link advertisements or other commercials, displayed on popular web pages. The infected computer might also show little buttons referring you to similar products, which will be distributed by the Adware itself. The victim should also consider, that the search results are compromised as well. The search results are often overloaded with spam and/or third-party advertising.

Unfriend Alert is usually bundled with some other free ad-supported software products and is being installed by default, when the user accepts the EULA, while performing an express/recommended installation of that software bundle. The possible distribution of Unfriend Alert varies, but is not limited to – installing third-party toolbars, free software products, video editing software, codecs, downloading e-mail attachments, clicking on ads or banners etc..

The main purpose of Unfriend Alert is to generate more traffic to the attacker’s domains, which could easily be monetized via one of the many online marketing platforms. Please note, that that the creators of such or similar adware or malware would collect information that might be used to track your browsing habits, however often they collect much more then your web search history. Unfriend Alert may use cookies and other relevant techniques, that might be used to collect private data like account information, username, passwords, financial information including credit card and bank account numbers etc. That’s why this malware infection should not be left unattended, and needs to be terminated immediately, as it is a serious threat to your private data and online security.

!!! Please note, that these infections could potentially bring up other malware to your computer and even cause a loss of data. Please do not underestimate such threats.
