What is Search in Tabs:

Threat Classification: Adware/PUP

The Search in Tabs is another dangerous and deceptive web browser extension, that pretended to improve users’ web browsing experience by helping them manage multiple browsing tabs, however, it was classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Product) and an adware by the majority of the malware researchers on Internet. The Search in Tabs is known to appear on users’ computer without their authorization or consent and when active, the rogue browser extension starts showing vast amounts of intrusive web ads, making the web browsing almost impossible. According to our malware researchers the Search in Tabs is also capable of monitoring users’ web traffic and to collect all kinds of private web browser data. Another interesting fact about Search in Tabs is that it is using the Windows OS Group Policy feature in order to make its removal much harder. Our security experts have reviewed all the data related to the Search In Tabs adware and they recommended all affected users to perform a full system malware scan, using an up-to-date and reliable anti-malware software, like the award-winning SpyHunter.

Usually, Search in Tabs comes packed with some popular free or “ad-supported” products and is set to install by default, just after the user accepts with the EULA and he/she didn’t opted-out the default/recommended/express installation option. The possible distribution of the Search in Tabs varies and is not limited to suspicious download sites, torrent downloads, peer2peer downloads, 3rd party toolbars, free PDF editors, free Video editors, free converters, free Video downloads, infected e-mail attachments, suspicious torrents etc.

The malware researcher have ran some tests and they’ve found out, that the Search in Tabs is capable of monitoring users’ web traffic and it could be used to collect all kinds of valuable private browser data, including origin IP addresses, search terms, search result URL, browser history, email addresses, account credentials including username & password, cookies, financial information like bank accounts, credit card numbers etc. Later, the collected data will either be sold or shared with other 3rd party companies, that will use it for their own marketing purposes. Our security experts are strongly recommending all users to avoid leaving such kind of active adware infections on their systems and to stop and/or terminate them asap, as these represent a real threat to users.

Upon a closer look, the Search in Tabs adware appears almost identical (in function) to the Tabs2Grid, Pixel world and other similar adware apps.

!!! Please note that these kinds of infections could potentially bring up other malware to your computer and even cause loss of data. We strongly recommend you to not underestimate such threats.
