What is MapFinderz:

Threat Classification: Browser Hijacker/PUP

MapFinderz (is also known as MapFinderz Toolbar or MapFinderz Extension) is an application developed by Mindspark Interactive Network Inc. and is powered by the MyWay search engine. The majority of the reputable malware researchers consider MapFinderz a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) and a Browser Hijacker, as it is usually distributed using some suspicious software bundles, configured to use silent (a.k.a. quiet) or stealth install and make some system and browser changes, which are responsible for the resetting of MapFinderz as the default search engine as well as the default URL for the New Tabs every time the browser starts, quits or the system boots or shuts down, making the recovery much more complex. Our malware researchers ran some tests and came to the same conclusion – the MapFinderz has been classified as a browser hijacker and/or a PUP. They’ve also warned us, that the MapFinderz will monitor and collect various browsing data, including various private browsing information like search queries, search results, cookies, originating IP address, browsing history and basically all data, which could be extracted from your browser (basically everything nowadays). That’s why we strongly recommend all our visitors to consider their computers compromised and to get rid of the MapFinderz as soon as possible, because it represents a clear danger for your online identity and computer security.

MapFinderz comes packed with other free software products and is being installed by default, when the user accepts the EULA, while performing an express/recommended install of the software bundle. The possible distribution of the MapFinderz varies, but is not limited to – installing third-party toolbars, free software products, downloading e-mail attachments, clicking on ads or banners etc..

MapFinderz will fill your browser screen with unwanted advertising, trying to attract more users to the advertised web pages and generate income from the online traffic. MapFinderz may keep track of your browsing activity and steal valuable information as login credentials, financial information and even bank accounts data. This information might be sent to third-party companies, which might used it for marketing purposes or for something else. That’s why this infection should not be left unattended, and needs to be terminated immediately, as it seems to be a serious threat to your online security.

!!! Please note that these kinds of infections could potentially bring up other malware to your computer and even cause loss of data. We strongly recommend you to not underestimate such threats.
