What is FileShareFanatic Toolbar:

Threat Classification: Browser Hijacker

FileShareFanatic or FileShareFanatic Toolbar is an application, developed by the Mindspark Interactive Network company and is considered a malicious browser hijacker by the majority of the reputable security analysts around the globe. After performing a closer review & a thorough investigation, our security experts classified the FileShareFanatic Toolbar as a malicious browser hijacker and an adware and/or a PUP as well. It has been distributed via some very suspicious or even dangerous software bundles and people are often not properly informed what exactly is going to be installed on their personal computer with this software bundle. This usually leads to confusion, where does this pesky FileShareFanatic toolbar came from?! Once installed on the victim’s computer, the bad toolbar will first try and modify the browsers settings & windows registry database, making the recovery even harder, then it changes the default search engine to Ask.com and the default new tab home page to http://home.tb.ask.com. The browser hijacker will attach itself to every popular and widely used web browser on the victim’s PC, and will compromise the browser`s settings such as the home page and the default search engine. So when next time the user performs a web search, it will be redirected to http://home.tb.ask.com/. Even though the HomePage looks and feels like legit and useful, don’t forget that you are dealing with people interested in revenue increase, which basically means that although the search results appeared just OK, it don’t means that they are the correct ones! Our advice is to consider the search results compromised and full of SPAM and 3rd party advertising.

Usually, FileShareFanatic Toolbar comes packed with other free software products and is being installed by default when the user accepts the EULA while performing an express/recommended installation of that software. The possible distribution of the FileShareFanatic Toolbar varies but is not limited to – installing third-party toolbars, free software products, downloading e-mail attachments, clicking on ads or banners etc..

FileShareFanatic Toolbar will fill your browser screen with unwanted advertising, trying to attract more users to the advertised web pages and generate income from the online traffic. FileShareFanatic Toolbar may keep track of your browsing activity and steal valuable information as login credentials, financial information and even bank accounts data. This information might be sent to third-party companies, which might used it for marketing purposes or for something else. That’s why this infection should not be left unattended, and needs to be terminated immediately, as it seems to be a serious threat to your online security.

!!! Please note that these kinds of infections could potentially bring up other malware to your computer and even cause loss of data. We strongly recommend you to not underestimate such threats.
