What is DeskFavourites:

Threat Classification: PUP/adware

DeskFavourites is just the next dubious and ad-supported application, that claims to improve your computer experience by providing a favorites organizer, that could save you time & troubles by providing you with a favorites organizing tool. After running some test, our security researchers warned us, that the DeskFavourites is usually distributed using various software bundles! Often the victims don’t know how did the DeskFavourites came on their machines!? These software bundles could distribute other suspicious and dangerous stuff like modified installers, that could recommend & install various  free software products including 3rd party toolbars, video codecs, anti-virus products etc. You should be very careful, because DeskFavourites uses this stealth (silent) installation procedure to get on your computer and to start annoying you by showing intrusive ads on almost all web pages you visit, collects private browsing data from your computer as well as other private and even financial information. If you have DeskFavourites installed on your computer, it is very likely that your screen starts filling with unwanted & very annoying ads, banners pop-up windows or other 3rd party advertisements. DeskFavourites has been classified as a PUP by the majority of the security experts on the Internet, mainly because of the distribution method it uses – “software bundling” and because of its suspicious behavior on the user’s computer. DeskFavourites uses a malicious browser extension, that is capable of injecting ads into almost every webpage you visit, which could lead to modifying the web page design and content – especially regarding the search results by the major web search engines! Once installed, the DeskFavourites quickly modifies windows registry database and browser’s settings, making the recovery even harder. If you start getting various web ads, claiming that they are – “By DeskFavourites”“Ads by DeskFavourites”, “DeskFavourites Ads”, “Powered by DeskFavourites”, “Brought by DeskFavourites” or “Brought to you by DeskFavourites” – you should consider your computer infected. DeskFavourites appears to work with all the well-known browsers like Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.

Generally, users that have it installed on their systems might experience various pop-up or pop-under ads, coupon boxes, banners, search suggestion windows, DeskFavourites link advertisements or other commercials, displayed on popular web pages. The victim should consider, that the search results are compromised as well, most likely overloaded with spam and other third-party advertising.

DeskFavourites is usually bundled with some other free ad-supported software products and is being installed by default, when the user accepts the EULA, while performing an express/recommended installation of that software bundle. The possible distribution of DeskFavourites varies but is not limited to – installing third-party toolbars, free software products, video editing software, codecs, downloading e-mail attachments, clicking on ads or banners etc..

The main purpose of DeskFavourites is to generate as much traffic as possible to certain domains, which could easily be monetized via one of the many online marketing platforms. Please note, that the creators of such or similar adware or malware would collect information that might be used to track your browsing habits, however often they collect much more then your web search history. DeskFavourites may use cookies and other relevant techniques, that might be used to collect private data like account information, username, passwords, financial information including credit card and bank account numbers etc. That’s why this malware infection should not be left unattended, and needs to be terminated immediately, as it is a serious threat to your private data and online security.

!!! Please note, that these infections could potentially bring up other malware to your computer and even cause a loss of data. Please do not underestimate such threats.
