What is ConvertBox Toolbar:

Threat Classification: Browser Hijacker/PUP/Adware

ConvertBox or ConvertBox Toolbar claims to be a very useful application, developed by APN LLC, distributed by InMind Inc. According to its official website, ConvertBox Toolbar allows users to convert quickly various documents, video, audio files directly from the browser. Although this really sounds like an useful tool, we recommend avoid using it, because it was classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Product) by the majority of the security researchers. Furthermore, it also incorporates all the classical features of a browser hijacker with search redirect & new tab hijacker. Users have reported that after using the toolbar they started getting various suspicious ads, pop-up windows, banners and other web advertisement. Users reported computers speed & performance issues occurrences as well. The toolbar could and will modify browsers settings, making the recovery even harder, then it changes the default search engine to Ask.com and the default home page to Search.ask.com. The toolbar application will start gathering information like visited web addresses, visited ip addresses, search history, web browse history etc – this information collection will later be sold or shared with other 3rd party companies (marketing agencies). The browser hijacker will attach itself to every popular web browser on the victim’s PC, to compromise the browser`s settings such as the home page and the default search engine. When the user performs a search, it will be redirected to Search.ask.com. The search results should be considered compromised – usually they are loaded with SPAM and other 3rd party advertising.

Usually, ConvertBox Toolbar comes packed with other free software products and is being installed by default, when the user accepts the EULA, while performing an express/recommended installation of that software. The possible distribution of the ConvertBox Toolbar varies but is not limited to – installing third-party toolbars, free software products, downloading e-mail attachments, clicking on ads or banners etc..

ConvertBox Toolbar will fill your browser screen with unwanted advertising, trying to attract more users to the advertised web pages and generate income from the online traffic. ConvertBox Toolbar may keep track of your browsing activity and steal valuable information as login credentials, financial information and even bank accounts data. This information might be sent to third-party companies, which might used it for marketing purposes or for something else. That’s why this infection should not be left unattended, and needs to be terminated immediately, as it seems to be a serious threat to your online security.

!!! Please note that these kinds of infections could potentially bring up other malware to your computer and even cause loss of data. We strongly recommend you to not underestimate such threats.
