How to remove Ads by Side Terms

What is Side Terms:

Threat Classification: Adware/PUP

Side Terms (a.k.a. SideTerms) is presented as a browser extension, that enhances user’s browsing experience by showing the related searches on the wide of the most visited web pages. Our malware experts ran some tests & found out, that the Side Terms is a rogue browser extension, often installed using suspicious software bundles, configured to use silent or stealth installation and which modifies some browser and system settings, which make the recovery of the system even harder. Furthermore, our malware researchers warned us, that the SideTerms is using intrusive ads delivery techniques and that’s why it should be classified as an Adware. Finally, our malware experts recommend all users, which are experiencing lots of intrusive Ads by Side Terms to check their systems for malware infections, as the appearance of these intrusive Ads by Side Terms is a clear sign of an active infection on the PC. Our malware expert concluded, that Ads by Side Terms are usually caused by a rogue browser extension, capable of infiltrating user computers without consent and when active it starts to display multiple intrusive ads on almost every web page, the user visits. Often most of these adware infections are using all the data, that could be collected, including all the URL visited by the user, the originating IP address (user’s IP address – location) all the information it could collect from the browser, which unfortunately could include usernames, passwords, form data + bank accounts, addresses and much more private browser data and the cookies and other data send by the remote site, which basically means – the entire traffic in both directions + all the saved browsing info. When the product collects this data, it actually keeps it and adware developers are often selling it to 3rd party companies, which will use it for their own marketing purposes! That’s why we strongly recommend all users to remove the Side Terms (or SideTerms) browser extension as soon as possible and to run a full system malware scan, using some recently updated, reputable anti-malware product, just like the SpyHunter4.

Generally, users that have Side Terms browser extension installed on their systems experience various intrusive pop-up ads, coupon boxes, banners, search suggestion windows, sponsored link ads or other types of commercials, which are being displayed on almost every web page. We recommend you to consider search results compromised and/or manipulated because they are usually modified by the rogue browser extension and may contain lots of 3rd party ads and/or other Link SPAM.

The rogue browser extension, which generates these intrusive Ads by Side Terms is often bundled with some other ad-supported free software products and is configured to install by default if the user has accepted the software bundle’s EULA and didn’t opt-out from the express/default install. That’s why our security experts are always reminding us to read careful what we agree with and to always opt-out and to use custom/manual installation, where we could check and deselect all software packets, that we haven’t requested to install. The possible distribution of Side Terms Adware varies but is not limited to – installing 3rd party toolbars, free software products, video editing software, PDF editors, video or sound editors, various multimedia codecs, downloading e-mail attachments, clicking suspicious ads or banners etc.

The main idea of the Ads by Side Terms is to earn revenue by utilizing the available resources – basically, the web traffic, hijacked by the extension is used to show sponsored ads and the next potential income source could be the user data, collected by the extension from the infected browser – this data is important for all companies, which are selling online ads and could even be more worth to some hackers, capable of decoding the hashes, containing all the cookies, credit card numbers, usernames, passwords and use them directly. That’s why this kind of infection should not being left unattended, and need to be addressed immediately, as it represents a serious threat to the user online identity and computer safety and security.

!!! Please note, that these infections could potentially bring up other malware to your computer and even cause data loss. Please, do not underestimate such threats!!!
