How to get rid of the D.I.Y. Toolbar
What is D.I.Y. Toolbar:
Threat Classification: Browser Hijacker
D.I.Y. Toolbar or D.I.Y.Toolbar is a web browser add-on/extension, developed by Mindspark Interactive Network Inc and is related with the HowToSimplified Toolbar powered by Ask.com. The D.I.Y. Toolbar is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) by the majority of the reputable security researchers around, but after a closer inspection, our malware experts have classified it as a malicious browser hijacker. The D.I.Y. Toolbar usually arrives as a drive-by installation, brought by some freeware product, which has it hidden in the Custom and/or Advanced section of the bundle installer. It is distributed via some suspicious or even dangerous software bundles and the normal user behavior is to agree with everything and just click next, next, next until the finish … Well guess what – this is the easiest way to get yourself infected by some nasty piece of crapware, which will costs you a lot of time & money or even permanent and irreversible data loss. That’s why we strongly recommend all our customers and visitors to read very careful, what they are going to install and to opt-out always if possible for custom installation – this simple trick will save you a lot of time, troubles and money! When installed, the D.I.Y. toolbar will change browsers settings & windows registry database, making the recovery a lot harder, next it will change the default search engine to Ask.com and the default new tab URL to http://search.ask.com/. The browser hijacker will take over every popular web browser on the victim’s PC, and will change and compromise browser settings such as the home page and the default search engine. When finished, the user will notice that the web searches are redirected to http://search.ask.com. Our security experts warned us, that we have to consider the search results compromised and full of SPAM, adware and/or 3rd party advertising.
Usually, D.I.Y. Toolbar comes packed with other freeware products and installs by default, when the user accepts the EULA, while performing an express/recommended installation of that software. The possible distribution of the D.I.Y. Toolbar varies but is not limited to – installing third-party toolbars, free software products, downloading e-mail attachments, clicking on ads or banners etc..
D.I.Y. Toolbar will fill your browser screen with unwanted advertising, trying to attract more users to the advertised web pages and generate income from the online traffic. D.I.Y. Toolbar may keep track of your browsing activity and steal valuable information as login credentials, financial information and even bank accounts data. This sensitive information might being sent to third-party companies, which might used it for their own marketing purposes. That’s why this infection should not be left unattended, and needs to be terminated immediately, as it seems to be a serious threat to your cyber security and/or online identity.
