What is Dragon Branch:

Threat Classification: PUP/adware

Dragon Branch or Ads by Dragon Branch or Dragon Branch Ads is an adware, that could display various banners, pop unders, surveys and pop-up ads and advertisements on almost every web page that you visit. The Dragon Branch is considered a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) and/or adware, mainly because it uses a very aggressive online ad marketing technique together with the distribution model – software bundles, it receives directly the PUP label. However, the ability to annoy the computer owner to new heights will actually label it an adware – the Dragon Branch could modify your system and browser settings changing your default search engine, default URL for New Tabs and of course your homepage. You’ve most likely received Dragon Branch by some questionable software bundle, which claimed to provide very interesting movies, programs, codecs or … At the end, your computer starts showing various ads shown as pop-up boxes, coupons, underlined keywords, advertisement banners and sponsored links while you’re browsing the Internet. Usually at the top or at the bottom of the banners, coupon boxes or pop-up windows, there is an inscription, which shows the name of the infection – “Ads by Dragon Branch”, “Dragon Branch Ads”, “By Dragon Branch”, “Powered by Dragon Branch”, “Brought by Dragon Branch” or “Brought to you by Dragon Branch”. Dragon Branch loads unwanted advertisements on almost every webpage you visit and it is compatible with all well-known browsers like Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.

Generally, users that have it installed on their systems might experience various pop-up or pop-under ads, coupon boxes, banners, search suggestion windows, sponsored link advertisements or other commercials, displayed on popular web pages. The infected computer might also show little buttons referring you to similar products, which will be distributed by the Adware itself. The victim should also consider, that the search results are compromised as well. The search results are often overloaded with spam and/or third-party advertising.

Dragon Branch is usually bundled with some other free ad-supported software products and is being installed by default, when the user accepts the EULA, while performing an express/recommended installation of that software bundle. The possible distribution of Dragon Branch varies but is not limited to – installing third-party toolbars, free software products, video editing software, codecs, downloading e-mail attachments, clicking on ads or banners etc..

The main purpose of Dragon Branch is to generate more traffic to the attacker’s domains, which could easily be monetized via one of the many online marketing platforms. Please note, that the creators of such or similar adware or malware would collect information that might be used to track your browsing habits, however often they collect much more than your web search history. Dragon Branch may use cookies and other relevant techniques, that might be used to collect private data like account information, username, passwords, financial information including credit card and bank account numbers etc. That’s why this malware infection should not be left unattended, and needs to be terminated immediately, as it is a serious threat to your private data and online security.

!!! Please note, that these infections could potentially bring up other malware to your computer and even cause a loss of data. Please do not underestimate such threats.
